The South Korean car manufacturer, KIA, has released more details of the Kia Sorento’s facelifted version. This is the first time the Sorento has been facelifted. 2013 model is going to make its global debut on 27th September at the Paris Motor Show in France. Before two months (June), the company had released the pictures of 2013 Kia Sorento SUV. New model comes with new look, stronger structure, high-tech equipments and enhanced specification. The car has got various upgrades for 2013 model such as improved powertrains, totally new platform, fresh look for the exterior, enhanced ride, handling and refinement as well as more safety features. The car will hit the most markets later this year.
The company has not revealed any specification details for the North America version of the upgraded Sorento. It is expected that North America version will be accessible as 2014 model. The company expects that 2013 Kia Sorento model will boost the Kia’s share in the SUV market by reaching the annual global sales of 265,000 units in 2013.
2013 Kia Sorento features redesigned front and rear end. The changes in the front end include headlamps with LED positioning lights, vertical-axis fog lights and new front grille; while at the back it will include a new tailgate with reshaped LED combination lamps. Users can improve the profile of the car with 10-spoke machine finished 19-inch alloy wheels (optional), according to the model. The car will be available with premium high-tech equipment (on some models), a new two-part glass panoramic roof with a single powered roller blind shade and a number of options to choose. The ride height and the cabin floor have been lowered to increase the access and legroom respectively. 30 mm legroom is increased in 2nd row and 9 mm in 3rd row.
Users have interior choices such as cloth/ leather in black or beige. You can also get improved instrument cluster inside the cabin like a new LCD and a center stack along with 8-inch LCD display screen. In European market, the center stack is going to available with 7-inch LCD display screen. The new center console design features a straight-gate selector along with a leather-gear knob on all the automatic transmission models. Other upgrades in the seven-seater cabin are satin chrome finish air-vent surrounds, door handles and switches.
A Bluetooth hands-free system; powered, heated and ventilated front seats; air-conditioning for the third row seats; heated second row seat cushions, and UV-reflecting solar glass are the premium options for the car. Various NVH reduction measures have also included in the 2013 Kia Sorento in order to make it the one of the fastest vehicles of its class.
The 2013 Kia Sorento will be available in three engine choices for European market and all these engines are mated with standard six-speed manual transmission. The Six-speed gearboxes (manual or automatic) will be provided as an option. Three engine choices are 2.0-liter diesel which churns out 148hp, 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine in the R unit that delivers the same 195hp but has much cleaner CO2 emissions (153g/km) as well as 2.4-liter Theta II GDI petrol engine with direct-injection that delivers194hp. Users will get a choice of 2WD or 4WD as per the model of the car. In some international markets, the 2013 Kia Sorento will come with the 2.4-liter MPI engine that delivers 172hp and 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine that produces 276hp.
The basic specification of the suspension is same in this new model but subframes that support the suspension are totally new with stronger designs. The mounting bushes have been improved to reduce vibrations. The ride comfort and stability of the car are enhanced by longer trailing arms at the rear, larger suspension bushes and HPD (High Performance Dampers). The number of turns of the wheel lock-to-lock is 2.95. The FlexSteer system (optional) has three modes such as Normal, Sport and Comfort. Comfort mode is perfect for city driving.
The 2013 Kia Sorento will come with high safety standards. It is made up of 25% more ultra high-tensile strength steel (with 150 kgf/?) compared to other vehicles in its class. To improve the crashworthiness of the car, the steel is heated by hot stamping to 900º C. A bracing bar is fixed between the towers of the front suspension. 18% torsional stiffness of the body shell is increased to improve the refinement and to produce a stronger base for the suspension and steering.
Other safety features of the car will be 6 front, side and curtain airbags, a reversing safety camera, SPAS (smart parking assist system) with ultrasonic sensors, 320 mm ventilated front disc brakes, HAC (hill-start assist control), ESC (electronic stability control), HID Xenon headlamps and a camera above the windshield.
